Animals in Zoos and Aquaria: Economic Benefit and Animal Rights Alex Freund ACBS 160D Section 2 @ 9am Alexa Ravit September 30, 2016 Introduction In 2014 at the free to enter, St. Louis Zoo in St. Louis Missouri, had an economic impact of $230,900,000 from tourism, merchandise, donations and employment (St. Louis Zoo – Economy Impact). Other zoo’s like the San Diego Zoo had a $350,170,000 impact on the economy (SD Zoo – Reznick). The question brought up by Animal Right Activist is that do the zoos and aquaria’s care about the animals and their rights? Or do they just care about the dollar sign that they see? Zoos and aquaria are popular tourist and leisure attractions that bring people and ages from all over the world. Many zoos do much more than have sites where people come to see the animals. There are research facilities and other habitats where animals go when the climate is not ideal. The first zoo was established in Philadelphia Pennsylvania in 1874. The Philadelphia zoo was built however in 1859 but was delayed due to the civil war (Phil. Zoo). Aquaria’s are much live zoos where people from all over the world come. Aquaria’s have fish and aquatic species that are exotic. The first aquarium is called â€Å"The Fish House.† It was built in London in 1853. There are over 300 types of fish (London Zoo).
